day 2

it is barely 8 PM here and i am wiped out. mama becky and i started the day out rather aimlessly, loosely intending to go to gamla stan (old town). it was good we were flexible because we ended up far, far from gamla stan and in front of the vasa museet.

the vasa museet is incredible. i am a museum dork but regardless of your nerdishness, this was intensely interesting stuff. the vasa is a warship from 1628, the grandest in the swedish navy at the time, that sank on its maiden voyage before even leaving the stockholm harbor. it was successfully raised nearly three centuries later, in the 50's, restored, and displayed in the museum. what is most staggering to me is that it is 98% original. that is insane. it is chilly and almost dark in the museum, and the effect of walking into this muted space to see a genuine 4 story tall seventeenth century warship is goosebump inducing.

                                                                    the vasa!

we spent several hours in the museum and then, after further exploring, sat at a cafe and people watched, an activity that apparently i am genetically inclined to because mama becky is far far creepier than i with her intense observing of passersby. we finally figured out the way to gamla stan and did a cursory cruise through its shallows, deciding to leave the real exploring for tomorrow.
some nice canadians took our picture before arriving at the vasa museet.

a striking, imposingly tall church we somehow wandered to...

                                                              outside gamla stan.
